Dorothy Pentecost's Obituary
Dot Jane Holbert – Pentecost was born August 14, 1931 in Walton, West Virginia to Clyde and Bessie England – Holbert. She moved to Miami, FL where she met her husband Cecil E. Pentecost who was stationed in the Air Force. On dates they would pick strawberries in the farms surrounding Miami. They moved to San Antonio, TX where she became a hit with the single Airmen because she was always cooking and baking for them.
She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Sunday School teacher in Mississippi.
She moved back to Florida in 1971 and began her involvement in politics. She was a member of the Lake County Democratic Executive Committee until the mid-2000. She attended many political functions on behalf of the D.E.C. She was invited to several Governor’s Inaugurations and to a Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C.
She was an active member in the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce during the 1970s – late 1980s where she co-chaired Miss Mount Dora and Junior Miss Mount Dora, assisted in the development of the Mount Dora Art Festival, and gathered many items to be donated to the time capsule.
Dot was a dedicated volunteer with the American Legion Auxiliary Post 35 in Mount Dora, FL, served as a volunteer during Girl State, she also donated their first lighted bingo machine to raise money for both the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Dot was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star Mount Dora, FL Chapter #103 and is a Past Worthy Matron, lifetime member of the Order of the Amaranth Chapter #34 and is a Past Royal Matron. She is a lifetime member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1389 where she enjoyed playing Bingo and running the kitchen with her family and friends on Spaghetti Dinner Night to raise money for the Lodge.
Dot was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels in 1971 and was such a dedicated volunteer they hired her to run one of their first meal sites in Umatilla, FL. It was the first meal site in Florida to have a garden and was a model to how future meal sites would be managed. The site grew so large that they moved to their current location in Eustis where she was instrumental in assisting them to obtain a grant to have the building erected in 1984 at 301 WestWard Avenue. She was employed with Mid Florida Community Services, Inc. Senior Services until 2012 due to health reasons that reluctantly forced her into retirement. She has over 40 years of dedicated service to the community and always went beyond her title of “Eustis Senior Center Site Manager” but was a true inspiration to all with her constant words of encouragement, selfless giving, inspiring others to do extraordinary things, and dedication to living life by The Golden Rule.
One of Dot’s heart felt accomplishments was receiving a substantial donation from one of her clients in 2012 / 2013 over six figures to aide others in need which was given to Mid Florida Community Services, Inc. in her honor.
Dot also volunteered in the 1970s with Bay Street Players and Girl Scouts where her daughter was active for many years.
Dot is survived by her son Cecil E. Pentecost Jr., his wife Vicki Pentecost, granddaughters Harmony and Amber Pentecost. Daughter Pamela Janeen Colmenero, her husband Carlos Colmenero and grandson Mateo Alejandro Colmenero.
In lieu of flowers the Family has requested that all donations be made to Cornerstone Hospice 2445 Lane park Rd, Tavares, FL.
