Dorothy Jane Howbert's Obituary
Dorothy Jane Howbert, age 91, passed away on January 26, 2023 at Cornerstone Hospice.
Born in Elgin Ohio on July 24, 1931, she was the last surviving sibling of seven. She was a single Mom of three children and worked as a waitress to support them. Her work ethic and knowledge of the restaurant industry helped promote her to manager and operator of the Blue Note cafe in Lima Ohio along with her lifelong friend, Vivian Beery. Through shared grief, death of Vivian’s husband and Dorothy’s only son, they teamed up to support each other. They moved to Florida in 1978, and continued to work in the restaurant business. Later in life Dorothy provided companionship care to the elderly, a calling she enjoyed and found rewarding. She cared for her friend and sister, Vivian Beery, until her passing in 2009.
She was a member of the Cassia Baptist Church, where she volunteered for many years. Her generous spirit supported our Veterans, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and local Humane Society to name a few. She loved reading the local newspaper, watching the “Price is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal,” listening to Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, eating ice cream or anything sweet, and collecting antiques and trinkets. She also greatly loved her cats Impy (17) and Fluffy (15), both who passed prior to her death.
Surviving Dorothy are her daughter: Christa Jane Jergens (Greg), grandchildren: Elizabeth Jergens, Matthew Jergens, Angela Tobin, Bobby Tobin, Kalah Tobin, Michelle Hadley (Kevin), Annette McEwen (Rob), and Niki Simpson (Shawn), great-grandchildren: Paxton “Blaze” (15), Ethan (13), Cheyenne (9), Jacoby (11), Kovu (8), Karsynn (5), Levi (30), Logan (26), Alyssa (28), Ian (21), Eric (36), Megan (29), Madison (26) and many nieces & nephews.
Predeceased children: Howard Vernon Howbert (Butch) and Carolyn Ann Tobin (Sis)
A special “Thank you” to Bob Thatcher (Peg), Gary Thatcher (Cindy), & Tom Thatcher (Dawn) for always looking out for Mom and I. Your visits and thoughtfulness were special to us. The handicap ramp was such a blessing, and you are the brothers I never had. Love you all very much!
Dorothy was loving, strong of spirit, determined, and lived life on her own terms. A beloved mother, grandmother & friend; a fierce protector of her family, friends and animals; we will miss her every day.
Dorothy will be laid to rest at Lakeside Memory Garden in Eustis Florida on March 25, 2023 at 11:00 am. If you wish, please donate to your favorite charity in memory of my Momma.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out with condolences.
Love, Christa Jergens & Family
