Carl Joseph Filippini's Obituary
Carl J. Filippini, 87 years old, of Leesburg, FL went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, after a valiant 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on October 9, 1926 in Camden, NJ, he was the son of the late Charles and Josephine Filippini, Plains, PA. Carl attended Plains High School and left school at the age of 16 to join the US Navy. He spent much of his service time aboard the USS Oakland. At the age of 50, Carl returned Hialeah High School, Hialeah, FL, and obtained his high school GED diploma of which he was very proud.
He worked for Plains Throwing Company, Interstate Dress and prior to his retirement in 1992, he was employed as landscape supervisor with the Dade County Parks and Recreation Dept., Miami, FL.
Prior to his illness Carl enjoyed working on his stamp and coin collections, He also enjoyed traveling, gardening, bingo and visiting casinos.
Carl was a member of St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church, Eustis, FL; American Legion Post 347, Lady Lake, FL; and the Italian American Club, Tavares, FL.
He will be forever remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and cousin and will be deeply missed by his many friends and neighbors. Carl leaves behind to cherish his memory, his devoted and loving wife, Carol, with whom he would have celebrated 40 years of marriage on April 26; sons, Carl V. and wife, Linda, Mechanicsville, MD and Joseph L. and wife, Marivel, Leesburg, FL; daughters, Sandra Abbott and husband, Dean, Kingston, PA and Jo Ann Lutinski and husband, Wally, Yardley, PA; grandchildren, Eric Verosky, Lansdale, PA, Andrew J. and Kristin Filippini, Leesburg, FL, step-grandson, Al, Leesburg, FL; sister, Mary S. Grippi, Clarks Summit, PA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rosalie Bender and husband, Hugh, Margate, FL and Nancy Roth and husband, Stanley, Pittston, PA; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and his favorite pet, Bambi.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 16 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm in the funeral home. A Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 9:30 am at St. Mary of the Lakes Catholic Church, Eustis, FL with Father Gilbert Medina, Pastor and Father Steven Roth, nephew of the deceased. In respect of Carl’s wishes, his body will be cremated.
